Tourism in East London has been driven by many bodies over the years , all with a varying degree of success ranging from "quite successful" to "downright useless".
This region offers pristine and largely undeveloped coastal beauty that the intrepid traveler will discover often only by mistake or in passing through.
However once the coastal area that stretches for upward of 100kms has been well explored by the lucky few that stumble upon its beauty , whether it be hiking , fishing or surfing etc. Its often kept a closely gaurded secret.
As residents we often fall into the trap of negativity and look at the City and its coastline through the tourism equivalent of occupational blindness. This malaise often drives our day to day perception of our surroundings . It is only until the occasional visitor may articulately relate thier wonderful first impression of our coastal beauty that we give any thought to it for a few minutes.
As residents and particularly those of us that directly or indirectly earn a living from guests to the East London area , we jointly share the responsibility of protecting this coastal beauty and presenting its best side to the world.
Yes we have infrastructural challenges , and major metro governance issues being plauged by corruption and politics. However through a visitors eyes these challenges will pale to insignificance and be seen as minor inconveniences that are overshadowed by a fantastic beach holiday spent along East Londons coast.
We cannot wait for innefficient and corrupt bodies ,appointed with little else but often a political agenda, to take responsibility for marketing our coastal diversity. Take the lead and let people know what Eadt Londons unspoilt coast can offer.
