Yesterday at Nahoon Beach a group of film makers from Cape Town were chatting about thier experiences following the Sardine Run AKA the greatest shoal on Earth off East London .
Sharks seen attacking huge baitballs of sardines , some the length of the rubber duck ( 4.5 m plus) , 2 Orca or Killer Whales , and an explosion of marine life is abound off the East London coast at the moment.
This time is coupled with great surf as the winter cold fronts hit , and often as surfers we worry about becoming part of this food chain.
Certainly more sightings of the big guys in thier grey suites are abound , however to date no incident of contact as yet and we hope it stays that way.
Humans certainly do not form part of Sharks diet , and one wonders if the attacks that have ocurred in the past are pure misshaps amongst the feeding frenzy.
Its still a good idea to excercise caution , and when bird activity is too close to the surf or bathing zone one should rather observe from dry land.
Bird activity further out often makes one feel that predators would rather be out there amongst the action rather than investigating an old tough surfer leg ( surely second prize to the healthy sardines on offer)
This is an amazing time of the year here in East London , so book a few days at Riversway Nahoon
www.riversway.co.za , we will gladly take you out to show you the sites from shore at Nahoon on a clear day when the birds are feasting and thousands of dolphins , many whales and sometimes even sharks can be seen feasting on sardines.
