Riversway meals a hit with regulars new patrons

At Riversway in Nahoon East London http://www.riversway.co.za/ , Dean puts together an array of home cooked meal options that often get the patrons back for more.
Some of his signature dishes include Lamb shanks , curries , a variety of perfectly done steaks with mouth watering sauces , roasts , braais and Potjie ( stews done in trditional pot on open fires for those not from SA) great chicken dishes and seafood platters all adorn the social dining area.

An evening in the dining area and bar can be great fun where many of our patron ( even a few qualified chefs amongst them ) will banter about dinners , and the correct way to prepare a certain dish and often even leads to guest participation in the process.

Many patrons now like family will suggest a meal ( like Trenchada ) or an extra spicy or chillie sauce , and this leads to Dean turning out yet another surprising dish that will invariably have everyone blown away.

During winter nights guests are often greeted by a warm smokey fire in the dining area and stories are swopped over a drink before dinner ( Usually at 7 pm each night) In summer a full guest list often warrants a fire and a braai in the courtyard or around the pool.

Many a great friendship has been formed and a now regular Riversway "family" of patrons now gather in the dining area and talk like old friends at a dinner party. Many of these regulars have stayed with us since our inception 16 years ago , and will not stay anywhere else.

A day of fishing in East London an exciting "tail "?

A recent outing to spend a day fishing the East Coast by my brother -in-law ,Dean our resident chef and barman and myself proved quite fruitful. We decided to park at Four Seasons as day visitors and paid our fee. This is a great facility as the coastal area has some really good fishing. Four Seasons is 42 kms from East London and if you stay at Riversway for 5 nights or longer we can guide you out here to experience the excellent fishing it has on offer for no extra cost.
We walked around 2 kms to a spot near the famed Deadmans gulley , and started fishing. We both fish light 9 ft ( Dean had an 8 ft with a small coffee grinder) Loads of small fish were present and bait didn't last beyond a few minutes in the water with each throw.
Dean then stated " I am going to put on a small hook to see what these little fish are" and proceeded to put on a no 2 hook usually reserved for catching small bait fish.
He baited it with a tiny piece of red bait . It was only a few minutes until I heard the scream of the small reel and turned to see an absolute look of panic on Dean's face , his spool was almost empty within seconds.

10 nervous minutes later and a combination of huge luck and Deans now self professed " skill " as a now professional fisherman (Sic) the 66 cm Silver Steenbras was landed. The intense jealousy set in almost immediately and I began ranting that this fish was obviously sick and did notice that it almost jumped from the Gulley.

I continued to relate this story to the amazed onlookers who stopped to admire the very openly carried and displayed fish.( ultimate Boast) Of course Dean said that the females in these groups were only attracted to him and his fish when one lady exclaimed " That's Impressive !! He could not contain himself at all.

A great outing and some fresh fish that night was enjoyed , ( besides the ongoing bragging about Dean's  new found professional fishing status by himself that increased with each Castle Light consumed)

Talk about the weather!!!

A subject often labelled as a bore or reserved for those socially challenged in conversation , but this years holiday season deserves a short mention. Mother nature played havoc on holidays emotions when she had holiday makers grumbling at the start with a few days of testing rainy gloom. The stress on the visitors was evident as thoughts of " oh no not again ", showed on the stressed faces doomed to spend their holidays in Hemingway's mall.

Suddenly in a complete turnaround mother nature turned tables and scorching hot , absolute windless pearler days just seemed to never end , with evening cool and pretty much mozzie free.

This continued unabated coupled with warm clean seas to herald in the new year , and lets not fail to mention  some of the best surf seen since the start of winter 2011 ( the traditionally " good time of the year here for waves)

Beaches were filled with throngs over over zealous holiday makers , toasting themselves all colours of the rainbow nation .

So that my socially awkward opion of the years holiday season weather and we now herald in a new 2012 with the African Open and great news of its retention in East London for the next 5 yerars . Spare some sympathy though for those training for the upcoming Iron Man event . The humidity seems relentless and well I guess if you are an Iron Man contender that should form part of mental and physical readiness .
